BetterFleet obtains a unique vehicle identifier from a vehicle when the vehicle connects to a charger. In the case of OCPP compliant DC chargers BetterFleet will receive a MAC address from the vehicle. BYD chargers will send the vehicle's VIN number and other AC chargers are not able to send any identifiers.
If you are seeing a number that looks like 8A:3C:71:BF:92:E4 or 8A3C71BF92E4, this is a MAC address and it means that charging session data is successfully being captured and stored in BetterFleet's database.
These identifiers can then be mapped to any custom configurable identifier, like a fleet ID, registration or any arbitrary text. During the initial set up of a depot, best practise is to let all of the vehicles cycle through and at least one charging session to be recorded. This ensures that the identifiers are captured accurately. We then correlate these to a fleet/asset list and corresponding identifiers are then mapped to more operator friendly descriptors.
Data is never lost through this process, it is simply adding identifiers that the system will look up and use to to convert MAC or VIN to user friendly descriptors. These can be modified at any time without corrupting historical data.
Vehicles can have multiple connectors, for example a plug on each side and a pantograph. In this case the vehicle will have three unique identifiers and all three of them can be associated to the one user friendly descriptor.
If the identifiers and user friendly names have been configured and you are still experiencing issues, it is likely a duplicate in the system or an error made during data entry.
